Olympic Trials Results

Saturday, June 14th, 2008 was the Olympic Trials for Jeff Funicello at 85 kilos Greco Roman wrestling. Jeff’s first match was 0-0, with the final round coming down to a coin toss, which he lost. His second round, he got a bye. His third round was a close match, but ended up going to the other opponent. He had his coach Roman and training partner Jeff by his side during the event. And many supporters came up to Vegas to cheer Jeff on.

Jeff did Greco style wrestling for 12 years, and after his final match, officially retired from Olympic wrestling by leaving his shoes on the mat and saying thank you for his successful career. (Rulon Gardner captured in the back of this photo clapping as Jeff says goodbye to the sport.)

12 other seasoned wrestlers, of whom many were Jeff’s friends, partners, and opponents, ended up leaving their shoes as a way to say goodbye after giving years to the sport. Jeff always said it was such a unique relationship, that these same guys have become friends and like family over the past 12 years are the same friends that are trying to steal each others dreams. These are relationships that are truly cherished and will continue even after wrestling is over.

Although this will bring an end to Jeff’s Olympic endeavors, he will continue trying to compete for the Grappling, Beach Wrestling and Sambo world teams. In addition, he will continue to coach MMA and possibly pursue that avenue if the right opportunity presents itself.

This last few months has been a success with Jeff qualifying for the Olympic team trials, him helping to get his longtime coach released from prison, and finding out that he will have a little Funicello coming in December.

The Funicellos thank everyone for their support in this chapter of their lives.

Our facility offers a professional size Kickboxing/Boxing/MMA certified Ring, over 1000 sf of professional quality mats, 10 Thai bags, 2 body bags, 3 tear drop bags, rope climbs, a 600 sf mezzanine level that allows oversight of the training below, and a 20'x20' private lessons mat. We also have men's and women's restrooms and a small marketplace for merchandise. See below for floor plans & layout!
